The type-face on that Wolseley sign is fantastic and looks really old-fashioned; Just as a sign should look.

The OXO sign is breathtaking; I love large signs if they're in good condition (which they're invariably not).

Yes indeed, the Wolseley type style is wonderful. I'm hoping the oxo will squeeze onto the landing somewhere!

Hello to everyone.

Some excellent signs there especially the Wolseley one. I have a couple of Wolseley signs like that and the name Wolseley is an interesting subject.

Frederick York Wolseley came to Australia as a 15 year old in 1851 and went on to be the accredited inventor of the very first mecahanical device to shear sheep with, at least on a commercial scale. There were others before him in America but he had the first to do it on a big scale. That ocurred in 1888.

By 1895 old Fred was no longer in his own Company as he had been kicked out and the main person running the show was a man named Herbert Austin, an engineer, who was actually the brains behind Wolseley. Fred Wolseley returned to the UK in 1899 and he died there soon after his return.

When the Company, then known as the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Company, wanted to start building cars they needed a name well known by British public so they turned to Sir Garnet Wolseley who was the brother of Fred Wolseley and a famous war hero. Sir Garnett Wolseley was actually the finacier of Fred Wolseley in the early days and his name was then used to pump up the tryes of the new car company, so to speak. The name Wolseley produced shearing gear right up until the 1960s and now the Company is known for logistics handling and have had a long an varied history.

Wolseley is a name that all collectors of sheep shearing equipment are very familiar with some of the sheep shearing devices that Fred Wolseley first invented can bring hundreds and even thousands of dollars.Fred Woleley was, and still is, a very famous name.

Here are a few Wolseley signs that are in my shed. For a Company as big as Wolseley once was not much advertising exists compared to other Companies of that era.

I have double side post mount (enamel), a Wolseley electrified sign (enamel) two tin signs, a show card and a picture of Wolseley himself.

Thank you all for the positive comments! Rusty, is the Wolseley a UK sign? Banjo, the Redfern has a good deal of surface scratching. Is there anything I can use to disguise them or polish them out? Ciggy, I'm hoping the wife will let me display the Oxo on the landing, if not, I'll give you a shout. Thanks again, Steve

Hello Steve,

All my Wolseley signs have come from the UK and it seems that is where all the good stuff is hiding.

It is hard to imagine that the Wolseley empire started from a little shed in outback Australia and grew into the giant that it once was and sporned things like the Wolseley car and eventually the Austin motor car, so named after Herbert Austin who was the mechanical brains behind all of the Wolseley empire, both when the Company was supplying sheep shearing equipment and motor cars.

Regards, George Grant(Rustycutters)

Hello to everyone,

I forgot to mention if anyone has got any Wolseley stuff they reckon they can't live with or simply want to sell I'd be more than happy to accomodate them. My email address is rustic1935@gmail.com
