Does anyone know where I can get a replacement thermometer for my Tom Long sign? It needs to be just under 10.1/2" long...

Hi enameljoy,

Just did a quick internet search and found this site. They even show a picture of advertising thermometers! (I've never used them so can't give you a reccommendation!)

Search "thermometer tubes" on Ebay US. There is a guy who sells many different sizes.

That's the sort of price I'd heard of previously, so I'm not surprised! Although the glass tube itself probably comes in standard sizes, I guess each thermometer is individually made to suit the application! Is it going to add say £90 to the value of the sign when/if you come to sell it? If was a Duckhams Adcoids, a Stephen's Inks or a Lyons Tea, I think you'd get your money back, and it'll look a good deal better too, but a Tom Long, although one of the more unusual tobacco ones, I'm not sure!

Each of the thermometers' glass tubes needs to be hand blown and calibrated to the host signs' gauge - thats what costs the money - the labour involved etc., and their pricing is roughly similar whatever size tube is required. I have used their (Russell) services previously and can highly recommend them. I think they can post them out now, it always used to be collect only from Dereham, Norfolk.

Hi all, I wonder what sort of numbers within the forums membership  have thermometers of the standard type ie, nut brown, tom long etc? I don't know if it could be applied to the type of manufacturing required, that if they got an order of 50 - 100 or more ,would they give a discount? Good business for them.

I once had a curved glass manufactured for a cabinet with the first one being made with a bespoke glass mould,I was then informed that I could have a dozen more for half the price each one, perhaps this could apply too to thermometer tubes. Rich

Great idea tatter but I reckon we'd struggle to get 50-100 orders on here?!

Hi again, I was grabbing figures out of the air really, but I have nine thermometer 'bodies' without their tubes which is a start.  It depends on the response of everybody out there to see what numbers there are?  The lengths of tubes can vary, so it obviously needs people to say what measurements are required.  I'm not too sure the 'exact' length the Nut Brown, Tom Long, Nosegay etc series, probably 10", but might be 11",as  the only one I do have is a  Lyons, and its 11" but has a bulb at the bottom end, and I don't think it would fit in the series of therms mentioned. It would be handy if someone could measure the length of their original tube (oooh matron) on those.   Its up to people what they think, and if enough requests can be generated, perhaps a largish order could reduce prices.

A footnote is that there was a company in the USA that exported pretty reasonably priced tubes, but they were red instead of a darker 'liquid' and didnt look quite right, but perhaps even they might be able to alter that? Unfortunately I've mislaid their contact details.

Best regards Rich

 Hi Advertad,

I have three which need replacement thermometers. "Nosegay"-"Sweet Rosemary" and a smaller "Nut Brown". Price has always been the reason for not replacing them. So, add my three to the total for a quote.

Count me in for one aswell. The measurement I came up with by just holding a tape measure against my Tom Long's groove was between 10 1/4 and 10 1/2 inches: I think a 10" long thermometer tube with the added bulbs at either end would work? We need someone to supply exact measurements from their existing thermometers really?...

I would gladly put out a 'plea' in the next BBR (GUARANTEED to reach thousands of collectors) to see if folk would wish to add to a combined order - worth doing IF they will offer a discount for such?

Next BBR will go to print end of first week in June - so best be sharpish - everyone press/ push to see if the numbers could add up to a worthwhile exercise?

I don't know if mine is typical, but I have a Nosegay thermometer, with its original tube, and that is not straight! To accommodate the spherical bulb behind the sign, there is a bend a little way up from the bulb. I don't know if this is standard to all that series of thermemeter signs though.
