R J Lea were founded in 1865 and manufactured tobacco/cigarettes at 45, Market St and Broughton Lane Manchester. Later they moved to Stockport. The popular brands for this company were "Chaiman","Tournament" and Lea's "Honeydew" and "Navy Cut". "Vice Chair" was introduced around 1910. This 3D showcard is quite rare as is any other advertising items from this company. Does anyone have any items from this company??? The firm was taken over by John Sinclair in 1937.

Another beauty of yours bacco. I think Steve Foster, ex cig pack club, from Brighton?, is the RJ Lea expert, he'll shed some light and/or offer to buy it if you can contact him.

Thanks Woodbine for the info, will follow that up. I have just looked at the list of brands this firm produced and was amazed at how many were on it as they were only quite a small manufacturing company. This showcard for the  "Tournament"  brand of round cigarettes first introduced in 1916 and came in oval-deluxe-large-ladyes-knights and No 2 indicating that they must have been popular.

Hi, I have a large counter match striker commissioned by R J Lea Ltd and produced in pottery by Wilikinson Limited - Staffordshire. it has a basket on his back for the matches and the striker is the front panel of the dish in which he is standing. I believe the 'pixie' figure is a known character of the time, yet to be fully researched. He's very heavily potted and stands 10" high. It has been suggested this could have been modelled by Clarice Cliff but until I find out more about the character, this is obviously unconfirmed.

Hello and Welcome

I am pretty sure that the figure is known as a Billiken. It was created around 1908 and was very popular for a few years. Type Billiken into your search engine and you will find plenty of information.

Hi se22bears, (Mark)

Have tried to reply to your email without success. It is a nice piece but I already have two. One same as yours and the other is a slight variation. I was going to post but unable to upload photo's  at the moment. (AL is going to look into it).

Vlad thanks for that info regarding the "Billikin" figure, I was not aware of it.

Found an empty packet of Straight cut Virginia under the floor boards of my house built in 1850, possible renovation in the early 1900, Chapman Juniors Cigarettes RJ Lea Ltd Stockport (Green packet) would be difficult to say how long they'd been sat there, expect they were the cheaper working mans brand found next to an lead pipe system that feed water throughout the house

Thanks in advance for any information

Hi

I have a similar ornament that is a little different, it is not a match striker and it does not have a basket on its back.  On the front it has the word Tobacco below the word Chairman and the marking also has a gold intial/ numer which is either a T, Y or a number one with a line under it - cant make out what it is supposed to be!  Cant seem to upload picture - could be because I am a technophobe!  Would appreciate moer info from anyone more informed!
