Hi All

I was wondering what people thought about mounting old enamels into frames?

This question is really related to those signs where the original mounting holes have rusted through. Whether people would a) drill new holes, b) stick to wall with adhesive, c) mount in a frame, or d) just lean it against a wall?

I know that some of these old signs where originally framed in simple oak frames (no glass) and displayed this way.

I’ve got one or two old signs in this condition as was looking to use some old reclaimed timber or old simple weathered picture frames to mount these into to be able to display them on a wall. When framing I would still show the sign to its edges thus being able to completely see it, warts and all.

Just wondered what people thought i.e. is framing naff or OK?

Thanks

Si

Far better to frame and fix frame to wall. If you try and drill the enamel you may well shatter the enamel and you will have an even bigger loss of enamel, in my opinion

I have a few "specials" framed and they look great , makes them abit more acceptable in the house (tidier and all that) little tip is to photograph them really well before you frame them this way if you ever want to sell then you can demonstrate to people what the edges of sign are like without removing frame - some signs 3x2 for example need a fairly thick frame to help support and keep them straight on wall 30mm upwards . Cig . .

Thanks All

I just wanted to ensure that I wasn’t going to get the ‘stone cladding over old brick’ reaction if framing them! But as Cig mentioned I also have the ‘looking acceptable in the house’ scenario, courtesy of the other half…

I’ve got some nice old seasoned and weathered Cedar wood strips of 40mm thick that I will look to use.

Thanks again;

Si

I would mount it in a frame - no harm done if you change your mind later. And if you have lost one of the holes then you're not really left with much of a choice

Some signs have a natural border around the edge e.g the typical Lyons Tea sign and if some of the edging is damaged it doesn't seem too much of a problem. However, on some plain signs a damaged edge doesn't display well and it looks more 'finished' for hanging with a frame for the home.
