In all honesty, I wasn’t holding out much hope for the October BBR as I though everyone must still be busy and skint after such a good summer.

I had booked a stall to promote the pot lid sale this coming Saturday and sell a few bits of advertising.  Alan was most welcoming despite me being a potential rival and set me up with a great pitch next to an exit for easy loading, unloading. I left Worcestershire at 4.30am it took an age for the sun to come up and promise a fine day for everyone. Amazingly I was early, and everything ran like clockworks thanks to the professionalism of AB and the team.

Almost immediately I managed to buy a few signs in the queue and everyone seemed in good spirits. Due to stall holders also wanting to walk around buying stuff, the show managed an initial flurry but with new stalls opened every few minutes. This made it good to keep walking around despite the fact there was no outside pitches.

I picked up some unusual bottles, cheap lids and a few enamel signs all unusual at or around market value and then heard of a rare Canterbury Brewery enamel. I managed to track it down and give a well known collector a profit on it and was dead chuffed to get it.

Then came a bit of a downer as I got caught selling a spare stallholders pass – this is not allowed – sorry folks, just didn’t want to lose £12 (I’m so tight).

Then came the public and it gave the show a real buzz, couldn’t get near most stalls so, after leaving a load of bids in the auction, set up my pitch as the travelling salesman. Met all the collectors who had contacted me RE the pot lid sale and had a good natter, whilst giving out over 100 free posters and fliers.

All in all it was good show for everyone I spoke too and had a great laugh to boot.

Cheers.

Al.

I stalled at Peterborough and BBR. Peterborough was hard work with little to buy and not many serious buyers apart from the trade.
I got to the unreserved auction on Sat and it was PACKED. Lots of new faces too. That said I bought well as did other dealers and collectors.
BBR always has lots of old faces and friends and lots of passionate collectors all of whom spend money.
I took a lot more money at Elsecar than Peterborough and enjoyed it a lot more. The social side is excellent too.
Hats off to AB and the team for another great show when the rest of the antique fairs and trade seem to be in a bit of a low.

Truly fantastic week-end. We knew it was going to be very well supported from the pre show responses/ calls/ emails etc. Best EVER Autumn one here without a doubt.

Two days of auctions (almost 1,000 lots) and a manically busy Show - never ceases to amaze me how the 'Elsecars' just go from strength to strength - amazing. The American trip Jim Hagenbuch organised really enjoyed themselves - and spent well!!!

As a show organiser Al A (good mate) let me down majorly by selling on a named stallholder pass. I do explain this time and again - 2 passes per booking and the named 'helpers' must be there all day/ bone fide stallholders. There has to be a benefit for them to stand all day/ continue to support the show if we want to maintain a continuing busy/ buzzing/ full hall of sales tables, and ensure the finances balance to meet ever rising costs.

I am asked time and again to sell a more expensive admission ticket than stallholder ones, but my aim is to retain the stall numbers. If you think about it the stall numbers could so very easily fall and the show lose its momentum if we did that - even tho' I would be quids in/ better off. The show stability is paramount for the ongoing well being of the hobby.

ALL stallholder badges are named - making for a professional appearance, and helps folk learn who they're dealing with. Selling on badges undermines soooooooooo much, which I guess Al does not understand. Steve Pickering was sold the badge and should really know better too.

Hopefully this little explanation (not a rant) will ensure it is nipped in the bud - last thing I want is to start banning folk - but if the viability of the event is jeopardised I would have no hesitation.

A stallholder stands all day to present their stock - buy/ sell.
An early entry is NOT a stallholder and comes in 30 minutes later (not a great deal of time to set up - but, that's how we do it, and have dome for years).

Already heads down on the November 22nd auction (no show) plus stall bookings already in for BBR's WinterNational on Sunday 1st February (& the Saturday Unreserved is piling straight away). No rest …….
