Recently bought this old watercolour very cheaply.  I wouldn't normally buy a painting, but the thing about it that took my eye, and lifts it above the ordinary is the road sign prominently placed on the right hand side.

Does anyone know what the sign signifies?  I know it's a very early one, and I'm sure I've seen it before, but I've no idea what it means.

The painting is old and original, the frame is untouched too, and it's got it's original old rippled glass.  The picture doesn't seem to be signed, but I can't be sure about that until I get it out of the frame, which needs a good clean.  Any info appreciated.  Thanks.

Most interesting. I think its too tall to be a road sign, more likely an early power line of some sort?

I'm fairly certain it is a road sign, and besides there's only one, and no sign of the power line running off it, but thanks for the thought.

It might be an old road warning sign, but usually it would have an extra or integral plate telling the motorist what the hazard was - has artistic licence crept in??????

I assumed it was a road or lane to the right of the 'sign'. Could it be one of a series of markers that were used to identify the route of the road when it was hidden under snow?

yes, this is a roadsign...the very first signs in the Edwardian era was just of shapes...I think triangle was a warning...ring was speed limit and I think there was also a disc and a diamond....have found a few before that had information plates attached to the post...as your watercolour is typically provincial and circa 1900-1910...this would match this type of sign....cheers.

mick...don't forget this is a watercolour and not a photo...the view probably didn't even exist....just an artists idea based on a sketched view and part of his or hers large folio of works....a road at this period and going through such a treacherous landscape would only be single track anyway...

Hello Hasbeen,

Thank you very much for that information.  I thought it was Edwardian after doing a bit of research.  Most early roadsigns were put up by the various motoring clubs and societies that existed in the early days of motoring.  As a friend pointed out when he saw the picture, to place it so prominently is almost surreal, especially in that setting.  It's the sort of thing that someone like Paul Nash or Edward Burra would have done.

Mick, the road is on the right hand side, more a track than a road, and probably pretty treacherous from the look of it.
