The American Line was established in 1871 and based in Philadelphia. They had this ship SS "Haverford" twin screw, built at John Brown & Co Clydebank, Scotland. Launched in 1901 and based in Liverpool for the Queenstown, Philadelphia service. Served as a troop ship and hit by torpedoes in 1917. She was renovated and purchased by White Star Line and decommisioned in 1924. The inside lid shows the manufacturer of the cigarettes W. Ariel Gray, Rumford St Liverpool. If anyone has information on this manufacturer I would be grateful to hear as they seem to have made the cigarettes for all the shipping lines.
