Found these little tins at the car boot today, I was wondering about the striker on the back,  were these tins used for matches?

No, if you look at the image on the tin, you can see the image is
taken from a cut down showcard ( hanging holes cut in half at the top)

Mel, there are a lot of different coccoa sample tins with strikers on the back. It was a marketing thing, to keep you using the tin once the contents were gone.
