In 1985 I bought this Watsons chair from a cafe in Aviemore for £40..The seat back has stamped into the wood "registered design E. East .Dundee" (also a "P" ) I have seen the odd same chair with a Watson enamel sometimes the feet cut down..possibly they have rotted...

I have also seen over the last 10 -15 years what I believe to be chair conversions to hold the sign (which does turn up loose)...selling as a genuine shop advertising chair for silly money

The question is, are there genuine variation in the chair design given out to shops by the Watson company or did they issue just the one design....My chair bought before the boom in reproductions and conversions etc....any thoughts

Hi Kennet - Personally I know of the sign being fitted to 3 designs of chair that I consider 'original'. I'll post a photo up on the site to compare. Other forum members may know more......

Thats a nice condition chair Ken. Definitely right. One of mine is also stamped on the top by the handle . There were some very good repros made by Relics of London in the 80's i believe but none were stamped on the woodwork. There was a red version of that Watsons sign. Had "Relics London" on the bottom of the enamel usually covered by that piece of wood at the back of the seat. This sometimes got erased by unscrupulous dealers. I recall selling a few at Newark as Repros , The Japs loved them. There certainly have been a few modern day efforts to convince people that the signs they put in chairs are genuine originals in fact i think we had a thread on here not so long ago " elm Garden" as a seller springs to mind.

Really interesting thread guys, thanks for the information. Is there a reason why Kennett's sign is double sided and Steve's isn't? I suppose the obvious one could be that Steve's would have been permanently placed against a wall or something. Or am I talking bollox again?

Good question that one, the vast majority of the chair signs seen are double siders, for obvious reasons given that the chair could be positioned anywhere in the store. I've only come across a few of the Watsons single siders, and always it has been the design shown on the other side. Maybe it was cost saving exercise by Falkirk Iron so that the chairs could be pushed out cheaper to the shopkeepers??
