I am after some help with a couple of signs i have to sell (sorry if this is the wrong setion i couldn't work out the best place to put it).

My Aunt inherited a house and these were found while clearing it out. The house was a shop back in the day and we believe these were used as display signs there. I have been voluntered to try and sell the signs as my Aunt has no idea how to go about it.

So i was hoping someone might be able to help me with some information. Such as any info about the signs such as age, rarety etc, also if anyone could give me a idea of what ballpark their value would be (obviously this relies on condition and i can add more pictures if required) and finally where is the best place to sell them?

The first is a large Oxo enamel sign 48" x 18" there is damage around where it was attached to the wall and also in a couple of other places where the enamel is chipped. There are also various scratches across the surface, the scratches are not visable from the front you need to see it from an angle to catch the light. All i have done is wash it in hot water.

The second is a Cadburys enamel one (the house was in Harbourne Birmngham only 3 miles away from the Cadburys factory and Bournville) this one is 24" x 14" and has more damage/marks on it

Then finally there is a John Player Special sign, this looks to be screen printed on perspex and is double sided. There are fleks of paint spatered on the surface in gold and red. This is 24and 5/8ths" x 14" and is in very tidy conditon.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, neither that Rare although both desirable !! The large OXO is a stunner and would appeal to many collectors. The Rowntrees....DOH Cabury ! ( Sorry ) is an unusual colour and despite more damage would still be very desrable.

Lots of members on here will make you good offers or you could stick em on ebay where they will make good money.

The perspex JPS probably has very limited appeal

Cheers lummox

I remember smoking JPS back in the day...quite strong but always had a nice flavour to it.

Anybody remember Players Plain?

Many thanks for the replies, if anyone wants more pictures by e-mail drop me a message to

I didn't think the JPS one would command much interest, but maybe to a motor-racing fan with the long history of sponsorship in F1 and the like.

To give you some guideline.... BBR Auctions sold a damaged Oxo, as shown here, hammer £400, with add ons £476, in their November 11 Antique Advertising auction.

Lummox has evaluated them all spot on/ astutely, as he always does. Big signs can be very difficult to move on, best perhaps to just take a good offer for all 3 - and run?

No expert but is it fair to say the version with the bulls head is more desirable ?

Usually yes, but i prefer the cubes one. Used to be a cheap sign but these days who knows?

That Oxo Beef in Brief sign is the first enamel sign I ever found - on a railway embankment in Fulham in 1984. It's what started my obsession.

Thanks for that, i notice that exact one is now on eBay at £550 buy it now.

Also thanks for all the info and comments, i've only had one offer on the OXO and no interest on the others so far. So i think i will pop them on e-bay in an Auction this weekend and let a larger audience have a look and let the market value them.

Cheers everyone, if i ever find more i will pop back and let you know.
