Hi all,
I'm new here and was wondering if anyone could fill in a few blanks with regards to the thermometer in the attached image. i've not seen many images online of the one in question nor found anything by way of research, i've found some markings a the bottom of the thermometer but don't really want to use anything remotely abrasive to clean it, any information or advice would be greatly apperciated. |

Hello Lummox
Thanks for the warm welcome, it's in relativly good condition considering it's been hanging in the garden 60 plus years. a bit of rust around the edges as you might expect but the area i mainly wanted to clean was at the bottom of the sign where i've found some markings. i can see part of a trade mark which i'd like to see clearer, plus it has a marking 9/30, i'll give your sugestion a go in the morning and post some images if it comes up ok. |

9/30 is the month/year of manufacture. |

Hello Beefy
Selling it isn't really a consideration just at the moment but i'll certainly keep your number for future reference, i'd like to find out a little more about it first. |

These thermometers were made by Jordan of Bilston (Birmingham), and these 5' tall 'blue bleed' versions date from the 1920s / early 1930s. They also produced an identical all-white version which tend to be earlier in manufacture, right back until the 1890s. The other members are correct, the numbers relate to the date of manufacture. These blue versions are very much sort after by collectors and you will no doubt get requests to consider selling it. They also produced a smaller version in a similar colour scheme 3' tall, and also in white, and an even smaller version at 2' tall, which I've only seen in white. Both these smaller versions have identical shaped ends, not the half moon/flat style you have. Be careful that the actual thermometer tube is not fixed too tight, as they can easily break under tension. A lot have had replacement tubes over the years. Originals have a very large oval reservoir at the bottom.
Hope this helps. Tykey |

Apologies, I've not been around recently.
Tykey, thank you so much, I know after giving it a bit of a clean and from knowledge from other memebrs that it was made 09/30. it's made by Jordan and Bilston. while it does hold a element of sentimental value i think i'd consider offers but as of yet failed to get any kind of valuation. |

Yep am in London as well ... asked as these items are fragile and don't travel well ( the glass thermometer !) , posting is not a great option. Am interested and have few questions but prob easier to take off line, (tobyboon41@gmail.com) ... all best |
