Singleton & Cole Tobacco Manufacturer's based in Shrewsbury, Birmingham and Leeds, did a tremendous range of Tobacco & Cigarettes. I have had great difficulty in finding info on this company and the only reference to this tin is a Singleton & Cole 1920's price list. I have not come across this tin before. Has anyone else? If anyone has information on this company, I would be grateful if they could share it with me?

Hello Bacco

Beautiful tin - and unusual topic. Normally Oriental tobacco motives limit themselves to Turkish or Egyptian (at times Babylonian or Assyrian) scenery.                                Have never seen anything from that part of the world before, but obviously the English have been active over there before.

Do you (or enyone else) know this cigarette tin from the same company? And is a imaginary view or is it Brighton or some other English holliday resort?

Hi Kjeld,

A very nice tin and recorded in Singleton & Cole price-list for 1914. The view could be anyone of the many seaside beech scenes of the period with the ladies changing carts pushed to the waters edge and there is no doubt that Brighton was very popular with the Victorians. However, I can't identify the "Pier" !!!!!!. The brand was introduced 1900-1905.

Thanks Bacco,

You really seem to be The Guru when it comes to British tobacco tins - The information is much appreciated.

Returning to the Afghan theme. Do you know other branches referring to that part of the world? Afghanistan India?

The tin I am sending you now is probably Egyptian, but the scenery is a weird mixture of a Middle Eastern cityscape and a Victorian couple in a howda riding an Indian elephant with Indian servants.

I love the week end tin and the caradoc flake never seen either. I wondered if anybody  knows any other Leeds tobacco firms apart from this one and Wood bros water lane. Broadie.

Hi Brankston & Broadie,

Like your "Caradoc Flake" tin and the "Perfect Treat" tin. I am sure that there were other manufacturers in and around Leeds. Singleton & Cole not only manufactured tobacco originating in Shrewsbury but moved into the wholesale business with stores around the UK.

Have posted a couple of pictures.

Kjeld, With regard your Middle Eastern tin, my knowledge is limited and I would refer to a publication "History of Greek Tobacco" which includes manufacturers from the whole of that region.

Hi Broadie,

That tin would look great in original colour but can't find the picture.

Thanks Bacco for your comments I notice there is one on ebay 190499212535. but it is not much better than mine, may just have a green tinge to it.    But I have just picked up a very nice AFGHAN FLAKE which i will post later.,it has spent most of it's life storing family photographs, so in good condition.

Hey Broadie,

Would that be the one that appeared, and then quickly disappeared again on a certain website on Sunday night?

A bit too quickly for my liking.  I wanted to bid on it!

Talking of other firms in Leeds, weren't Tetley based there?
