Burnard & Alger
The business was started by Charles Burnard on his family farm in Millbrook, Plymouth, around 1840. In 1854 Burnard went into partnership with a Mr Lack operating a fertilizer business from premises at Lambhay Hill. They moved to new premises at Sutton Road before Lack was bought out by Burnard for 44,000 pounds. William Henry Alger then joined the company and it began trading as Burnard & Alger from premises based at Cattedown, Plymouth on the banks of the River Plym. It was registered on 19th September 1890. The business was thereafter maintained by various members of the Burnard and Alger families until 1920 when the fertilizer business was sold to the Anglo Continental Guano Works. Burnard & Alger carried on in business as Cattedown Wharfs Ltd until selling out to Everard & Sons in 1957.
Charles Burnard and William Alger both served as Mayor of Plymouth at various times.
