Hello all, what a lovely forum you have here, i had no idea these signs were so collectable, here was me thinking collecting vintage cigarette cases was a bit weird? clearly i am normal-ish!

i have been given a lovely enamel sign by my best friends grandfather to sell, it was up in the police station he was sergeant in in the early 60s, and its rather lovely.

however i have listed on ebay but have since had alot of interest and wonder if i am underselling it price wise? we had said about £100 but im getting offers that are far more?

am i allowed to link to ebay?? if not if u search raleigh steel sign vintage it will pop up on ebay as there arent many?

any help is most appreciated!

Do you have a photo of the back? Others here will give you an accurate guide price more than me, but you've got nothing to lose by letting the auction run its course.

Here is the front, on first impressions it looks like an export jobbie to me. English looking fence post but foriegn looking scenary.

The makers name will tell all though!

I reckon £500 to maybe £1000, but if I offered £1500 now because I had a private buyer or a swap in mind, would the seller lose out?

Cheers.

Al.

hi all

thanks for the replies, i have taken a photo of the back, which sadly appears to be void of any makers mark?

however there is another pic of the detail on the front at the bottom, i have also measured the exact size, 22 inches tall, 17 inches wide

Hi there.

A strange sign you have there. A modern looking back and reference to printing on the front, when it would be stenciled rather than printed being enamel and all?

Hi Paula

Early sign backs often / nearly always have a grey wash, with odd splashes of colour. Recent repros are usually uniform in colour black or grey often with a track of two lines across them.

If you look thru the old enamel sign forum you will find  ' fantastic backs ' which will give you some idea. If you check the Useful tips and warnings  etc forum you will see some dodgy signs with dodgy backs !!

Obviously your sign is not early, neither does it appear to be a recent repro. The bike would suggest a manufacture date of  perhaps the 40's or 50's .  The makers mark / serial no. is strange, not one personally I've seen before. If its enamel ( which it appears to be ) it should be quite heavy. If it only weighs light it would more likely be tin.

Talk of £500 , £1000, or even £1500 may have got you both worried and or excited ? Your ebay listing is fine, more than a few people will have their eye on it & don't worry it will find its correct price be it £50 .............£1500 or somewhere between !!
