Saw this on ebay going down and down in price until I couldn't resist any longer. Seller descibed as Zebra woman !!! Must be a really good story behind this if only someone knew it. |

I believe she is a real " Stove char " ...certain ladies went round " posh " houses cleaning and re-polishing stoves. The tape like stuff round he cuffs was to keep the lower shirt sleeves clean otherwise they would have got caked with stove blacking. Hanging from her belt she also has brushes and scrapers for cleaning the ovens and flues etc, She was possibly " sponsored " paid a few shillings by Zebrite to have a photo taken to endorse the product lummox

Some good background information there Ross . They were hard days for the working class .
In Sydney there were " block boys " ,or " sparrow starvers " kids who were paid a shilling a day to sweep the horse dung on their allocated section of the block into a pile . The cart would come around once a day to collect the piles . They would have been hard pressed to keep the streets clean as the picture below shows ( Pyrmont Bridge 1904 )

not my sign, I was outbid unfortunately. Here is a photo of an even better one I missed out on. This sign came from the same collector I bought my Huddart Parker from, he said he didn't want to sell the insurance sign, when I got there a couple of weeks later to pick up the Huddart Parker, he had sold it, I was really disappointed ! |
