Im interested in writing a book on showcards, as ive been an avid collector of them for many years. With this in mind I'm looking for any help from fellow collectors. I'm looking at dates from 1890-1920s  any images and help would be greatly appreciated.

Heres a couple of pics of just a couple of mine.

Hello Stuart, good to hear from you again. The book is a great idea especially if the images are backed up with some good meaningful historical research rather than quick fire captions. Dating is not that easy but I'd guess that those two you have shown are late Victorian with the Zebra being the older of the two. Some companies used existing artworks and simply added the lettering so the date of the image does not always give an accurate date to the showcard. In other instances where the images are commissioned directly to an artist (ie GNR Jolly Fisherman) an accurate date is easy to apply. Pears used a lot of existing artworks as did many biscuit companies so the style of lettering can be a good guide of dating. Lettering and general layout changed significantly in Edwardian times as did print repro and lithography/photolitho (ie Five Boys). There are plenty of people with good knowledge who visit this site so good luck going forward.

Hi Stuart

Sounds like a great endeavour and one I look forward to hearing more about.

I love a good showcard and have quite a few myself - just need to keep them away from direct sunlight, unlike an enamel.

Late Victorian showcards have such a beautiful and warm aura about them - true artistry.

Hi Phoneguy, I'd love to see some images of your showcards

Hi Stuart

Will try and do a few tomorrow.

Do you happen to know what exactly is the definition of a ‘Showcard’

The most obviously to me must be those images on heavy card with two holes at the top for string hanging.

Would images on heavy card that stood upright on old shop counters also be ‘Showcards’? or are these known as shop counter displays?

And finally, the very old and beautiful adverting prints - usually framed (sometimes with the manufactures name or initials embossed in the frame). Would these also be called ‘Showcards’? or just advertising prints/posters?

Or can 'Showcard' refer to all the above?

Cheers

To me showcards are on thin or thick card, with or without a hole and any size. I've got several in my collection starting from 6-10" I'm struggling to post some pics of my own collection, if anyone can advise.
