Am I the only one who now views each ' decent ' motoring sign with the suspicion ?
This sign is relatively new to ebay from Oz ..................but without handling it who knows.
A certain dealer / collector who has instigated high value ' copies ' from an eastern direction has in my opinion a lot to answer for. Oh yes he's making money and fooling lots of people but he and others could be slowly killing the market. Before you scoff it happened with Guinness Carltonware, Pieces regulary making £400 to £600 now struggle to reach £100 because the repros have totally dragged all the confidence out of the originals |

Your'e absolutely right Mr Lummox - having the benefit of comparing it with my own example ITS WELL DODGY with a capital D, but it certainly is out there to decieve. As you say, ultimately it could affect confidence and prices which will be bad for everyone.
PS I thought you'd be at the bottle show ??????????

Sensible words there, I think the large amounts of copies of both railway signs and implement seats in cast iron has, i'm told, badly affected the price of the real items, It will also happen to higher priced signs, especially as the copies are now being turned out deliberately to deceive. Not that it affects the type of sign i buy!! |

Its right. There is a late and an early version of this sign. The odd thing about the sign is the hanging holes but these look repaired which makes them look weird. Al. |

Well I'm sticking to my guns. Didn't know there was two versions and the one I have has a lot more detail, especially on the lid of the can. If you compare the ebay one with the one in the AA gallery there are discrepancies, quite apart from the short back and sides its had from the angle grinder. Another arrow in my opinion. |

My final words - original or not its well over-priced at that. You should be expecting to pay in the range of £700 to £900 for one of these. |

Looking on a better screen, those holes are all over the place. They arent the right size either. Design looks OK though, I have an example of each design at home, will take pics when i get back. The earlier version has a great dotty litho detail on the top of the can. Anyone compared sizes Steve, you and everyone else may get an apolgy sooner rather than later. Al,. |

A curse on all the forgers and fakers, some people have no sense of shame. I'm wondering what all these signs will do to the real ones values ? |

I was looking at a very expensive double-sided motoring sign a few days ago; a heavy sign, with really nice quality thick enamelling, in very good condition. Not one I'd ever seen before either! It had very fine chipping all around the edge, but the two suspension holes were pristine and un-marked. On close inspection, it seemed quite wrong that the enamel was glossy where it was chipped, instead of being matt where flakes come off, as you'd expect! I now understand that this is one of a (the?) group of repros! I'm uncertain if they have been made for decorative purposes, or deliberately to deceive, but I'd be very cautious buying a sign just from a photograph now, particularly if it was motoring related! Can anyone produce a list of this latest group of repros? |
