Hi Lummox,

The family of LLoyd's tobacco manufacturers were founded in 1785. They split into two independent companies in 1866. H.C.LLoyd were based in 76/77, Fore St, Exeter . R. LLoyd & Sons who were the bigger of the two companies, were based in Clerkenwell & Holburn. They had acquired the goodwill of Huxley & Co of Whitechapel E in 1895. They also owned "Menzella" and the "Balkan" cigarette companies. They had a large range of brands of tobacco & cigarettes such as "Bondman"-"Yacht Club"-"British Brigade"-"Sweet as a Rose" etc etc. They themselves were taken over by Cope Bro's & Co Ltd in the early 1900s. It is interesting to note that both companies kept the same trade mark "Elephant & Castle". Mind you other companies use it as well. Hope this helps.

I have posted some of my R. LLoyd tins/boxes. If anyone has others of this company it would be nice to see them.

Hi Broadie,

Glad you like the "Stirling Castle" tin as it is quite unusual. Your "Gold Lack" tin, was a brand introduced in 1895 and continued up to 1915. I have posted mine which is not in the best of conditions.

Marvelous stuff Bacco, here is my Lloyds Topsail and another little teaser for you. What does the A 1 at Lloyds stand for on this Copes Navy Cut tin?

Hi Cabs,

Sorry for delay in replying but have been away. Your Lloyd's "Topsail" brand tin, looks to be in very good condition. With regards to the Lloyd's A1, I think as mentioned previously, that it coincided with the takeover of Lloyd's by Cope's in the early 1900s. The A1 brand was very popular with Lloyd's customers and as such was retained.

Brankston, your two H C Lloyd's (Exeter) are the first I have seen of this firm. I did read that both of the Lloyd;s companies had the Elephant & Castle as a trademark, but I can't see it on your tins?? Other brands of this company "Typsy Loo" - "Yacht Club" and "Exeter".
