no idea what it was for  has anybody any suggestion?..it is metal 3 inches high ..on the inside is the ITC number 7736 and D460..the holes are 1 inch deep

Hi Kennett,

"Three Nuns" tobacco/cigarettes maufactured by S.Mitchell & Sons, Glasgow. Your item/holder dates from early 1930s and could have been shop counter holder for cigarettes or more possibly a "Cheroots" due to size of holes.
