I think this is a match-holder/striker figure, European and possibly "Zimmermann" and is cast brass with bronze finish around 1870s. What I can't fathom out is why his head comes off and why the goose under his right arm has a metal rod stuck down his gullett. He has a pipe in his left hand. I thought it may have been a counter lighter for smokers to light their pipes with a taper but not sure and no obvious evidence underneath. Anyone any ideas??

The pipe could be for fattening the goose by force feeding to obtain foie gras (fat liver)

How about the head being used to push the tobacco into the pipe?

Cheers.

Thanks Kennett for your comments but I do not think so! Als suggestion as a possible Tamper is viable. However, after further research, I think the head was taken off to allow a lit match to be doused within the hollow body of the figure as matches during this period were dangerous. Anyway, sticking with this explanation until someone come up with a more plausible alternative. I have posted pictures of another matchholder/striker about same period 1870 to 1880.
