This is my latest acquisition in all things Nelson.

It has a date which looks like 1890 and the medals are dated 1883 – 84.

The Hatcham London address on the label is now New Cross.

I am a little confused as to why it has what appears to be an external thread with a cork.

Not that I know anything about bottles but it is interesting trying to find out.

All I know is it is older than the other two I have, that have New Cross instead of Hatcham in the address line.

It’s 3 5/8” (90mm) tall btw

The date on the medals won by the company bear no relavance to the date of the bottle unfortunately. Your bottle is from the 20s at the earliest and more probably the 30s. The cork in an external threaded bottle is just evidence of early recycling, the user and original owner having returned to the pharmacist for a top up, minus the screw cap. The pharmacist having topped it up from a drug round or bulk container merely provided a quick fix stopper. These are often found this way.

Quite a few labels about, So may simply be a case of someone putting a label on a bottle, Kiwi is right definitely after 1920

Thanks guys
I think the key is in the address...when I find out the postal change from Hatcham to New Cross that will give me a date.
I discount your label suggestion though Lummox.
I am going to take a punt at 1910 to 1920 based on my knowledge of Nelson's essence products and i will let you guys know when i find out

the addy's on the bottles are
Britannia Works Hatcham London SE14 and Britannia Works New Cross London SE14

I think they are the same address and that Hatcham changed to New Cross at some point.

The blue label is definately older than the reds so any thoughts on the age of the red labelled bottles as the date of 1894  doesn't seem to represent the age of the bottles

thanks indeed guys

Regards

I would put all three bottles at round about the same date. The two red labelled examples show the tell tale line just below the lip that suggests a machine made finish and thus a date sometime after WW1 and probably a good few years past that dateline. Dont be fooled by the cork stopper, these were used way past WW2 by many retailers, often with a bakelite top on the cork. Once again I'd go for late 20s/early 30s I'm afraid.

The clue is SE 14, which I think came into effect in 1917.
