Hi hilbert,

I do like your "Wood's" tin. Have posted a few of mine.

I have added the Player's "Roundhead" flake tin as well.

Nice one Bacco.

I'd love a Roundhead. Nice lettering and colouring. Is that by John Player?

I've never managed to keep my hands on a Hignetts. I've seen 3 variations of that. One that just has HCV and another that says Hand Cut Virginia, rather than Handy Cut.

What's with the American theme, was it just a branding thing or was it in honour of something?

Cheers

Hi hilbert,

The "Roundhead" tin is John Player's. The brand was introduced in around 1897 and withdrawn in 1920.

With regard to the "Handy Cut" virginia. I think that it was originally manufactured for export to the USA. In 1861, John Hignett and Thomas Cope formed the Richmond Cavendish Co in order to exploit the export trade in tobaccos; it was liquidated soon after  the formation of the ITC. Hignett.s in 1930 merged with Ogden's.

The posted photo's of Hignett's 1918 price list, shows that "Handy Cut" was still available in the UK.

Excellent reference. Lot's of brands I've not heard of. "True Bird's Eye" and "Real Jam". Have you seen any tins for those?

Looks like the three lines of text bottom right been blotted out?

I note that your price list shows Hand Cut, again I wonder when and why they changed it to Handy Cut.

Selling tobacco to the US, isn't that like selling coal to Newcastle.

Thanks Bacco great info as always.

Three of mine. I really like the Players, very plain but nice lettering! Finger tins seem especially hard to find in good condition. I recently upgraded my Hignetts Handy Cut so have one to trade if anyone is interested.

Cabs

Lovely stuff.

I agree, hard to get good condition, they were probably quite useful for their intended purpose. Had a lot of  trouser pocket time.

I can't seem to find you in the profile section. How do I contact you?

Banjo Boy,

That would be a sought after tin indeed. I've never dared imagine it.

Hi hilbert,

There are most of those tins and packets that I have never seen. The lines blotted out refer to Hignett's London Agents address which again was absorbed under the umbrella of the ITC and the British American Tobacco Co (BAT) was set up to deal with exported goods from UK & USA to other Countries. So, "Handy Cut" was exported to other Countries as well.

Cabs, I do like your tins and in particular that Mason & Son "Mixed Flake". They are in super condition.

Banjo, never come across a "Redbreast" version as I know your Dad would love one of those!!!!!
