I normally buy just Brirish manufacture's but thought this was really quite nice and unusual.

"Sweet Caporal" introduced in 1878 and manufactured by Kinney Bro's of New York and proved to be a very popular brand. The trade mark was registered in Canada in 1887 and was so popular that it enjoyed 50% of cigarette sales in Canada. In 1911, Kinney Bro's merged with the American Tobacco Company. Their cigarette cards were very desirable and popular with collectors.

Hi Cabs,

Nice to see the packet. Wonder if they did a tin??? I wonder if the origin of the brand name "Caporal" has anything to do with the soldier's rank and a play on words!! Does anyone know if he is a "Corporal"????

Caporal is indeed the French equivalent of corporal. It's also a type of tobacco.

Hi Bacco, its strong dark and smelly! Pretty sure you can still buy caporal tobacco in France and Gauloises Caporal cigarettes are still around.

Good call Cabs, like Gauloises.

Just googled it.

From Dictionary.com

a strong coarse dark tobacco

from French 'tabac du caporal' corporal's tobacco, denoting its superiority to 'tabac du soldat' soldier's tobacco
