Another Rowntree's Enamel Sign just been sold on Ebay,

I informed the seller it had been seriously cut down, but I don't think he was bothered.

See what you think, item number 181135419346

The correct size should be 8 feet x 30 inches

with the Royal coat of Arms in the corners, and a bright yellow line all round.

Otherwise a nice clean sign, but well over bought for the seriouse cut down.

I think it is probably right. You quite often had signs in shop doorways etc that were shaped like that to fit in with the angle of the doorway etc.

Was keen on this sign as fitted a space in the kitchen , didn't think it was a cutdown and lost out on the bidding - stomped down the pub for a pint feeling bit peeved and back home to read this - glass of wine on go now feeling better .. Great site !

Its only my opinion, but that sign didnt look cut down to me,,nor do i think that it should have a crest in each corner or a border around the edge.. The sign was probley made that way to fit under a shop window that was slightly on the piss..In other words, made to fit to that shop,or counter whatever..

Signs were definitely customised for specific locations, and this one was presumably made for a shop on a hill, judging by the angle of the bottom edge! It's interesting that they've cropped off the top of the 'R' of 'Rowntrees' though, to fit it on the narrow end of the sign! If they tried to put on the yellow band it would have looked very odd if it were to follow the line of the sloping bottom edge of the sign!

The enamel frit wash on the rear was consistent all around the edges so that to me indicated it was OK. Like other forum members have said, some signs were custom made for specific locations. The tip of the R right on the edge did look odd though.
