Glad to hear I've made your day BB. His Venus Soap sign seriously though is an example of a simple British sign which imo I'd rather own than any continental sign I've ever seen. |

That Colman's Mustard doesn't really do it for me to be honest despite it being British. All down to taste really. |

Surely the simple answer is you get to like what you are brought up with. When I started collecting I never saw a foreign sign, years later when I saw some they looked garish to me so i did'nt generally like them so much as English signs. I still don't BUT that in no way takes away their merit or desirability . Lets be honest if I had been brought up say in the Continent it would have been the other way round. Thank god I was'nt born in France I'd be drinking horrible thick treacle coffee instead of good old Breakfast Tea ...................now that really would be something to get ANGRY about ! |

Interesting topic. People talk about 'British signs' and 'foreign signs' but of course there's the grey area of British signs advertising foreign products and/or with foreign place names...
They maybe 'half foregign', but I certainly wouldn't part with my Spencer's Cigars or Ransomes, for example, at any price. For me, its mainly to do with the artistry of the image and/or the overall stregth of the message as opposed to where the signs hails from, but I cant deny that where all of these things are brought together in a British made sign advertising a British product, it does become extra special.
Cheers
Dunc

Regardless of all this talk of subjective appeal though, if nothing else the old British manufacturers - in the early days at least - used higher quality enamel and iron than anything I've ever seen on a foreign sign. Consequently even a relatively plain sign from Chromo or Patent enamel quite often has a depth of gloss and colour superior to anything I've ever seen on a sign from abroad. |

That's a nice sign Lummox.
For the record I like the continental stuff, not that anyone cares. I'll go back to me own section.

Here she is - like a beautiful woman, she takes my breath away every time I see her, which is usually during clandestine meetings at my storage unit, as she's simply too large to accommodate in our modest London house! I'll have her displayed one of these days... Cheers, Dunc
