Looks "right" to me so far as can judge from photos (???) but never seen it before. A maker's mark would be nice. Had a BIN price when first listed.

It looks a little faded, or is that just me. However its still a cracking sign and just over £1000, with 9 days still to go.

Such a small size, where would this have been displayed back in the day? Perhaps it was part of a bar wall, I have seen enamel used like tiles in old buildings? But then again, it is quite faded, so must have been outdoors?

players looks like an 'old old' sign , never seen another so can't add too much -- sailors eaten a few pies thou. For me the not so rare wills star is more pleasing to the eye with a bit of colour .

Interesting, apparently the Sailor debuted in 1883 and the life preserver was added about 5 years later. That means this sign cannot be older than 1888, so i think the seller is probably bang-on with the 1890 estimate.

I can understand the question from Mick.

But in this case I think the letters are not suppost to be red?

The "rope" around the life preserver is darker brown on the bottom right and lighter everywhere else. The "U" shows signs of a deeper red. It wouldn't be a vibrant colour red, probably more of a burgandy or darker brown.
