Hi Banjo, very interested to find this old thread as I have a circular version (not a cut out) with the mark "Imperial Co Birmingham" I assume that to be the Imperial Enamel Co Ltd not the Imperial Tobbacco Co Ltd?. Please can you help whith the makers name on this auction example

Hey Hoarder,
I don't know if the two companies were related, but there was a company called Imperial Enamel Co LTD, New York, that was in business from 1890 to 1910. One could suspect that they might have been a sister company of the British one? Just a thought.
Here is the one sign I have from them, I always liked it. Cheers

Nice sign Mick, thanks for the info but how can it be New York USA when it also states "Made in England"? |

Just an after thought could it be that the New York set up was just as agents (offices)? thus not actually making the signs. I dont know when the UK Co was formed but found this advert dated 1896. Seems like they were dissolved in the 1950s.

Your assumption is correct , Hoarder . New York office for a company that was based in Birmingham with a London Agency also . (Willing & Co ) |

...........but still very nice and very rare - I have one of these with no resto, unfortunately I have never been able to post on here so can't show it but would be happy to send pic to someone who can. I have seen drawings showing these on the stairwell of early buses. |

Agree circa 1890.
The Players Sailors ship is referrred to in his cap ribbon. She was HMS Hero, a iron clad cruiser launched in 1885 shown to the right of the sailor. The other ship to the left is the HMS Britannia launched 1820 , thus depicting the old and the new.

I'm no expert , but I reckon this sign may never have had any reds . Possible fading to the grey / yellow but overall looks to me that it is not far off the original shadings . |
