Hi again
If someone can tell me how to post a picture on this thread from an iPhone I can show you an image from a reference book that seems to verify the date and non faded colour-scheme.
The book is called petroliana ....the hunt. Author is Alan Chandler. Page 84.
Hope this helps

Pics have been emailed to you. Please post your left nut to the London testicle donor group. Shaftesbury Road. EC2.  Make sure you shave it first and pack it in ice!!

merry Xmas

Those pics don't disprove anything I said about the blotchiness/unevenness of pigment in the lettering. That pic shows a bright uniform yellow; whereas the sign on eBay has a blotchy/washed out uneven kind of a pink/brown. There are lots of colour differences all round in fact.
By the way it wasn't me who said anything about my left testicle
Merry Christmas

Not to worry, Hink. It was I who put my left testicle on the chopping block. I dont however feel like we have a consensus on the colour of the lettering. I think at best, I would be on the hook for perhaps an earlobe or foreskin. I think its fair to say that the printed book might be skewing the yellow a bit, and the ebay version shows blotching / fading. Without seeing side by side in person, we will never know. I suppose the gents at the factory might have not been particularly advanced on colour matching in 1890? Who knows

Something's definitely happened to the pigment on that lettering - that's all I'm saying. It's just totally different from that bright yellow in the book illustration.
Anyway merry Xmas!

Also I have some examples of signs which have faded colours but retain a gloss.
